  • 7 Dog Breeds Born for Snow

By Laura Cross and Shayna Meliker

There's a certain type of dog who can't seem to get enough of the fluffy white stuff, regardless of whether you have two inches or two feet!

Inspired by the cold winter months, we rounded up seven breeds who appear to be born for the snow; they're known for everything from an impressive working heritage in the chilly mountains of China to saving lives during a 1925 diphtheria outbreak in Alaska. Check them out below.

With his arctic white fur and warm grin, the Samoyed was built for wintry weather. Legend has it that the Samoyed people and their dogs were driven north by other tribes until they were at the edge of the world, in a vast land of ice and snow. But it's not just a story; in real life, the Samoyed has proven he can handle the cold. In more modern times, the breed took part in Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.

    Siberian Husky

Originally bred as sled dogs by the Chukchi people of Northeastern Asia, the Siberian Husky rose to fame in America when these dogs raced across the frozen Alaskan wilderness to deliver life-saving diphtheria serum to the town of Nome in 1925. We're sure you've heard of the most famous of these fast, double-coated dogs: Balto.

The large Bernese Mountain Dog hails from the snowy city of Bern, Switzerland, near the Swiss Alps. Berners helped farmers by pulling carts, driving livestock to fields or market, and serving as watchdogs. They're thought to have descended from Mastiff-type dogs who came to Switzerland with Roman armies 2,000 years ago.

    Chow Chow

He looks like a teddy bear, but the dignified Chow Chow is not a cuddly canine. He hails from the chilly northern regions of China and was developed as an all-purpose dog capable of hunting, herding, pulling carts and guarding the home.

Named for the Mahlemut, an Inuit tribe in Alaska, the Alaskan Malamute was bred to pull sleds in harsh climates. The breed is possibly the oldest and definitely the largest of the Arctic sled dogs. If you dream of participating in the Iditarod this March, you'll certainly want an Alaskan Malamute on your team.

    Great Pyrenees

The white-as-snow Great Pyrenees is a powerful and brave breed with a long lineage as a flock-guarding dog in the French and Spanish Pyrenees mountains. Instead of herding livestock, it was her job to protect them from wolves and other predators. And with all that fur, it's no wonder the Great Pyr likes to cool down with some winter weather!

If you're going for a long journey in the snow, be sure to have a Saint Bernard by your side. In the mid-1700s, the monks of Hospice du Grand St-Bernard in Switzerland used the giant breed to help locate and recover lost travelers in the snowy Alps. The greatest Saint Bernard of all was Barry, who found more than 40 people in the Swiss Alps between 1800 and 1812.

    A videoklip ötlete honnan jött?

Igen, erről szól tulajdonképpen a dal is, bár franciául világosabban átjön a mondanivaló.

London (AFP) - Prince Harry became a master in toilet-building during his expedition to the South Pole, a fellow trekker said as he lifted the lid on the royal's hidden skills.

Last month Harry became the first British royal to reach the pole after a three-week charity trek with injured military veterans from Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia.

The 29-year-old urged employers to help wounded service personnel into civilian work, as he and members of the team reunited in London to celebrate the successful trek on Tuesday.

"The Wire" actor Dominic West, who took part in the 200-mile (320-kilometre) journey across Antarctica, said the prince, who is fourth in line to the throne, had been very much part of the team.

"He seemed to specialise in building latrines," said West.

"He built this incredible castellated structure with blocks to keep out the wind and it even had a loo roll holder."

Describing the experience of using the toilet built by a prince, the actor said: "Sitting there, looking at the beautiful view thinking 'this is a royal flush, in every way'."

Harry is patron of trek organisers Walking With The Wounded, which raises funds to retrain injured troops and help them find new careers outside the military.

"Inspiring others is one of the cornerstones of this charity: to demonstrate to those who have experienced life-changing injuries that everything is still possible," he said.

"I hope this truly unbelievable achievement by everyone behind me and back in America, Canada and Australia... will remind everybody that they can achieve anything they want to.

"Our wounded, injured and sick do not want pity. They just simply want to be treated in the same way that they were before they were injured: with respect and admiration.

"So if anybody out there has the ability or the resources to give these guys or girls a stepping stone back into employment, then please do. You certainly won't regret it."

Harry, who has shaved off the ginger beard he grew during the expedition, said a documentary on the trek would be aired in March.

It was announced last week that Queen Elizabeth II's grandson is giving up his role as an army attack helicopter pilot and Captain Wales, as he is known in the military, will instead take up a desk job coordinating army commemorative events in London.

Duncan Slater, 34, of Britain's Royal Air Force, who had both legs amputated following a blast in Afghanistan, completed the trek.

"If you lose a limb, or if you're injured generally and you spend a lot of time in medical care, you lose your self-confidence," he told AFP.

"Given a challenge, where you're going somewhere where hardly anyone's been before, you have to re-evaluate everything in life, and it gave me a lot of confidence when I got to the South Pole.

"It's almost like anything is possible. It gave me a new perspective on life."
